Kwesi Kyei Darkwa, widely revered as His Royal Blackness (KKD), stands as a towering figure in Ghana’s entertainment, media, and fashion realms.
His historic recognition as the first-ever recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ghana DJ Awards in 2013 marked a pivotal moment, not only celebrating his personal legacy but also elevating the status of DJs and media personalities within Ghana’s cultural tapestry.
Born on December 19, 1965, in Tema to a family rooted in royal lineage from the Adanse traditional area, KKD’s upbringing was steeped in rich cultural heritage that profoundly influenced his identity and career. His parents, beyond being entrepreneurs owning the Darkwah Plaza and Jatokrom Hotel, were ardent promoters of West African music in the 1970s, running record shops that exposed KKD to the rhythms and stories of the continent from an early age.
This early immersion ignited his passion for entertainment, with childhood memories of writing plays at six and orchestrating school events by eleven, signaling the emergence of a natural showman and cultural ambassador.

After excelling at the prestigious Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), he pursued Journalism at the Ghana Institute of Journalism, followed by a Master’s degree in Audio-Visual Production from London Metropolitan University.
His academic pursuits extended internationally, including marketing and production certifications from institutions in Japan and the UK, equipping him with a global perspective that he would later infuse into Ghanaian media.
His professional career took flight in the early 1980s at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), where KKD’s charismatic voice and magnetic presence quickly made him a household name.
