ABOUT GHANA DJ AWARDS
The prestigious Ghana DJ Awards was created to celebrate and appreciate the talents of Disc Jockeys (DJs), as well as to foster the development of the Ghana music industry by rewarding and celebrating Radio, Mobile, and Club Disc Jockeys who have excelled in their fields of endeavor.
It is, actually, the only national award scheme in Africa that appreciates and celebrates DJs for their work. It is also a platform that rewards veteran DJs who have blazed the trail in the music industry over the years.
The main objective is to recognize the electronic dance music scene and seeks to let the world know that the art of DJ’ing is a respected craft, with DJs playing a major role in the overall Music and Entertainment industry.
In 2012, the very first edition of the Ghana DJ Awards was conceived by Merqury Quaye, a DJ, music lover, renowned MC, and radio show host. The very first edition was held at the National Theatre on 15th February 2012 and has been held annually since then.
Since 2012, Ghana DJ Awards Festival has consistently remained one of the premier music festivals in Africa, welcoming thousands of concert-goers every year.
Preceded by a nationwide roadshow featuring over 100 DJs annually known as Pub Fest, a DJ Cypher, and a nominees jam, Ghana DJ Awards Festival grows bigger and more thrilling each year.
2020 marks the 8th year of the Ghana DJ Awards set to hold on November 21, 2020.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 and safety protocols such as the ban on social gatherings and social distancing, the nationwide roadshow featuring and unearthing DJs annually known as Pub Fest could not come off this year ahead of the main event.
As part of efforts to keep fans thrilled and the DJ community-engaged, Merqury Republic held one of the biggest online DJ Battles during the lockdown featuring two previous winners of the scratch DJ of the year category – DJ Que and DJ Mpesempese. The battle dubbed Que Vs Mpesempese was graced by Kidi and was viewed by over 12,000 people.
Notable artists who have dominated the main stage at Ghana DJ Awards include Medikal, DJ Neptune (Nigeria), DJ Mic Smith, DJ Que, Kuami Eugene, KiDi, Darkovibes, Stonebwoy, DJ Vyrusky, MzVee, Kwaw Kesse, DJ Kofi (UK), DJ Black, DJ Jimmy Jatt, and more of the hottest names in music.
Ghana DJ Awards Festival 2020 is under the theme ‘In The Mix Together’.
