Paralysed 60-Year-Old Spin Instructor Reinvents Herself as DJ to Continue Leading Online Classes

When a life changing accident left Sue Frost paralysed from the chest down, it seemed her days of leading spin classes were over. But the determined 60-year-old from Lincoln has found an innovative way to keep her passion alive by reinventing herself as a DJ for online spin sessions.

Sue, who had been a dedicated spin enthusiast and instructor for over 15 years, suffered a devastating injury after a fall at home three and a half years ago. The accident forced her to give up her active lifestyle, including teaching up to 11 spin classes a week.

“It changed my life completely,” Sue shared in an interview with the BBC. “I went from a very active life with my spin classes, cycling, and working full time, to doing basically nothing. Now, I’m just trying to reintroduce the things I loved, but in a new format.”

Her journey took a positive turn when she connected with Paul Gribby, a Nottingham-based DJ and producer, through SoundLincs, a Lincolnshire community music charity. Paul, 49, saw Sue’s passion and was eager to help her adapt. “I believe that no matter your situation, there’s always a way to do the things you love. It’s just a matter of finding how,” he explained.

Together, they discovered DJ equipment that could sit comfortably on Sue’s lap, allowing her to mix music and curate playlists for her online classes. “It’s something I never imagined myself doing,” Sue admitted. “I thought I was too old for DJ decks, but Paul showed me that you’re never too old to try something new. Music was always a big part of my life, and now I’m just expressing it in a different way.”

Sue is now practicing her DJ skills with plans to host online spin classes, bringing her community together once again. “I can’t get on a spin bike anymore, but that doesn’t matter, I can still teach and inspire others online,” she said.

Paul is equally inspired by Sue’s resilience. “Originally, Sue just wanted to try DJing for fun, but it’s opened up a whole new world for both of us. There’s always a way forward you just have to find it.”

Sue Frost’s story is a powerful reminder that passion and innovation can overcome even the most daunting challenges, inspiring others to adapt and thrive no matter the circumstances.
