The 4th Annual Ghana DJ Awards took place on Friday (March 18th) at the Accra International Conference Centre in the heart of the capital. The event, which was hosted by Lexis Bill and MzGee, brought out a who’s who of Disc Jockeying in Ghana from yesteryear to present day. The excitement was contagious even at the show’s inception as the personalities were beaming with joy to talk to the media, sharing their stories as they made their way through to the main auditorium of the Accra International Conference Centre. The humility and grace was genuinely felt, considering that the DJs are often the unsung heroes responsible for the success of major artists.
The attendees soon made their way to the auditorium after a pre-party powered by premium brand Jack Daniels for the commencement of the ceremony and the energy was at an all time high. Being filmed by Fashion GH, most in attendance brought out their best attire to show off to the TV lenses available. The arrival of the beautiful actress Nana Akua Addo, who turned up in a vintage Rolls Royce provided by Eurostar Limousines looking all stunning turned out to be one of the highlights of the night. With a quick glance at the audience including HonourableAblaDzifa Gomashie, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, it was clear that the best in the game were sharing the spotlight as the likes of Andy Dosty, DJ Jimmy Jatt, Mr Kaxtro, Killa Fingers, DJ Que and everyone in between were in the room.
Winners included, DJ Black, who won, for the fourth time, the coveted Overall Best DJ of the Year, and DJ MJ for Female DJ of the Year. Mr Kaxtro made it out big as he appeared on stage with big wigs including DJ Black and Andy Dosty to grab the Scratch DJ of the Year trophy and BPM competition winner DJ Wabs took home Discovery DJ of the Year award.
One of the highlights of the night was Majid Michel, Kalybos and Moesha Budoung, cast of the Amakye and Dede movie hitting the stage to surprise the audience with a hilarious act. Another hilarious moment came when Rainbow Radio’s Baaba Spirit mounted the stage to pick on Samini, Shatta Wale and DJ Foe.
Kwaw Kesse, MzVee, Eno, Gallaxy, Apaatse, took turns to light the auditorium up with hit songs and a lot of energy. MzVee adorned the stage in the performance of her top hits. Halfway through the performance she asked DJ Vyrusky to stop the music so she could commend the hard work of all DJs, stating that it is the artist that needs the DJ and not the other way around. The same was said by Ras Tuutu, during his sensational and energetic performance.
The hallmark of the ceremony came when ,DJ Que, DJ Vyrusky and DJ Wabs got on the stage to exibit amazing skills on the turntables to the admiration of all present including special guest DJ Jimmy Jatt who also picked up the Best International DJ of the Year Award.
The creator of the Ghana DJ Awards, Merqury Quaye in an interview thanked those in attendance but also emphasized how important DJ’s are to the entertainment industry and to music in general, and that their contributions should never be overlooked.
